Xylitol

Is xylitol bad for multiple sclerosis? I just ordered a new liquid multi vitamin from NOW and it has xylitol listed in the ingredients!

I eat xylitol as a sugar substitute. It is a glyconutrient and is very different from aspartame so should be ok. Of course people can have intolerance to anything but it seems to be fine for me

My ideas are not generally shared by many others; with my belief that insulin is involved with MS, here is my opinion on xylitol:

It is my understanding that xylitol, sorbitol, lactitol, erythritol and mannitol are polyols (sugar alcohols) and, as such, trigger insulin secretion. In an effort to avoid excess insulin, I try to avoid these polyols. I have found them in toothpaste, mouthwash, even fish oil capsules! They are everywhere! Even in chewing gum, I believe.

For the same reason, I avoid artificial sweeteners -- they are ALL sweeter than sugar and trigger the release of a greater amount of insulin than simply sugar.

I am currently reading The Best Life Guide to Managing Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes by Bob Greene. On page 74 he states that "As some researchers have suggested, because they taste sweeter than sugar, artificial sweeteners train your taste buds to prefer very sweet foods." This tends to support statements I have made in earlier posts here.

Xylitol is deadly to dogs and other pets - even in tiny amounts. Imagine cooking pastry with xylitol and dropping a bit on the floor by mistake. That's one dead dog. They claim it's safe for humans but then they used to say that about tobacco.

Sometimes poisons work in subtle, long term ways that researchers can't easily detect. When the canary dies - get out of the mine. I wouldn't touch this stuff if I was you.

Thanks for the responses. Just can't believe what is allowed/marketed in things that we consume! In this particular case, it was a liquid multivitamin!
