What Happened?

Post by Blaze »

What's happened? Several threads and replies that were posted earlier today have disappeared. Most of them were good discussions--little that I thought would be considered inappropriate or offensive.

Does anyone know what happened?

I lost all the PMs I sent this morning. It looks like 12 hours of posts are missing from page one. TIMS sure has been unstable lately.

NHE, what's happening?

Yikes!
Did you report it to the moderators?
Was the message from the hacker or from the moderators?

You mean know one else saw this message? Weird. Yeah I attempted to go to thisisms and instead of going to the site a white screen appeared on my computer and in the upper left hand corner it said "site hacked by ....". I thought the site was having major issues so I did not think to report but it sounds like I should. Thanks HappyPoet.

I saw it too, and noticed that Ghost was spelled with a little o. Seems that it may have eaten up many hours of posts. The following article is what I found while doing a search.

"Last week, I was on a Web forum where someone taked about his Web site being defaced. He'd been running an insecure install of phpNUKE without keeping on top of security patches, and his site was taken down and replaced with a page reading "Hacked by GHoST61" and a picture of the first president of Turkey.

I did some investigating, and discovered that GHoST61 is a prolific Turkish hacker who defaces Web pages in a very characteristic way; he or she replaces the home page with the message "Hacked by GHoST61" and sometimes a picture of the Turkish president, sometimes a missive against the Iraqui war, and sometimes a combination of both.

GHoST61 generally strikes me as being more of a script kiddie than a serious, knowledgable hacker. A Google search for the phrase "Hacked by Goost61" currently turns up about 30,000 results, the majority of which look like sites running old, outdated, insecure installs of phpNUKE, Drupal, ZenCart, osCommerce, or other server apps with known security holes. The attacks are probably automated, with point-n-drool tools that search for known vulnerabilities in popular Web application and content management packages."

I will confirm that the site was attacked by a script kiddie hacker on Tuesday. Arron reset everything and may have restored some files from a backup thereby accounting for the lost posts. However, please let me know if you notice any continual problems.

Thanks, NHE

Some kid fresh from Barnes and Noble with a "Hacking for Dummies". Groan. They give real hackers a bad name... I don't think the good denizens here fully realize what a headache it is to not only keep a site running, and moderate, but deal with that stuff on top of everything else.

Thanks NHE. Too bad because some good (and respectful!) discussions disappeared and don't seem to have been restored.

I wonder whose GHoST is haunting us?

weird world we live in that for someone to get their kicks they gotta stoop to messing with a site like this. it would be nice if these people would use their energy and smarts to get rid of some of the real garbage bags that float through the internet. i hope they feel real proud and all puffed up!! bet they are thinking-boy i fixed those people with ms. i showed them-how dare them crawl to their computers and use their crippled bodies and their very intelligent minds to stand up to the system and pursue a help and a possible cure. YEAH, I'M DA MAN!!

usually rats lurk in dark places.
