MS clinic's practices stir alarm

Tens of thousands of dollars have flowed from multiple sclerosis patients to a Winnipeg-based company that is coming under fire for "pressuring'' patients to fly to India for the headline-grabbing "liberation" procedure.

CCSVI Clinic, which operates out of an office in Fort Garry, has now come to the attention of Health Minister Theresa Oswald, who said she would forward concerns to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba.

Until early December, CCSVI Clinic, which calls itself a non-profit group of physicians and researchers, had been acting as the Winnipeg referral agency for Mobile Life Screening, a Fargo, N.D., ultrasound clinic.

Flying to India is not the best option currently, since treatment is available closer and for a lower price than the $15,000 quoted in the article. Closer is better because patients may need to revisit their IR if complications arise.

The pressure that she received after getting CCSVI imaging done is flat-out wrong.

Canadian's government has been aware of CCSVI for over two years now. If they were to move faster towards clinical trials, there would no longer be an issue of medical tourism companies. The efficacy of CCSVI treatment needs to be established so that the procedure can be available locally. Faster faster faster.

I think this is old news, from 2011 about this time or a little later. It is not happening now as far as I know.

The Canadian Federal and the Provincial governments are still hoping the rest of the world is wrong about CCSVI The print media in Winnipeg prefers to consider this to be a non-issue and that the general public has heard enough. The MS Clinic Neurologists are still using Dr. Freedman's arguments and as a Canadian I don't hold a lot of faith in our Government to actually move forward with any trials.
My feeling is that the thinking goes kind of like this - The economy is bad and boy what a waste of money this will be because it doesn't work and we know it doesn't work because, well, just because we know these things.
