Someone there? Please help.

Post by Bazan18 »

I got diagnosed with MS last year when I was 18 and got put on avonex. I took them for 3 months and stopped because I ran of refills. Every week on those 3 months were hell. It was to the point were I laid on the bathroom floor in so much pain. When I stopped for 2 months I felt normal. I forgot I even had MS. Then on my next doctor's visit I got out back on. The side effects got worse. I get random cramps in my legs and I threw up today for 5 mins straight. I finally told my boxing trainer I had ms and he told me he was going to buy me a book by Terry Walhs, a doctors who reversed her MS and went from being on a wheelchair to running and biking. I told him how the doctor told I was going to be on those horrible shots for life and he told me not to believe it. Because when you have it doctors tell you to take medicine and when they have it, they do the research and find the cause like Dr. Walhs did. I want to stop taking the shots I just can't take it anymore. Right now I keep having cramps in my legs and calves. I just want to be healthy again.

hi and welcome :)
re boxing, as an active person have your docs looked at your nutritional status at all? how's your diet, and do you take any supplements?

athletes with neurological symptoms like yours seem to be fairly regularly showing up here on the forum. might be a good idea to do some investigating along those lines, if only to rule out any possible influence diet and lifestyle might be having on your nutrient status.

this link points to the last related inquiry we had in feb 2014:
http://www.thisisms.com/forum/under-25- ... ml#p221356

the post links up to about 9 other related inquiries going back to 2010.

this is my nutritional approach to dealing with ms (targeting healthy nutrient levels rather than ms patient levels) http://www.thisisms.com/forum/regimens- ... c2489.html
i use the exact same approach for friends and students that have health issues related to athleticism. target healthy.

it could be a nice complement to the wahls diet approach.

about those leg cramps, i'd say you might want to have a look at magnesium. do you have any serum magnesium tests on file, and do you know how much daily magnesium intake you're currently getting? if not, see if you can tally up your intake by looking at this food list and the milligrams of mag per serving: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tnam ... #foodchart
if you're up near 600mg per day, magnesium is probably not your concern. if you're below 450mg per day, it's very likely something to follow up on.

There are numerous MS medications available to you. Since the one you are taking is making you ill, ask your doctor to switch you over to another.

I was told that my vitamin D is low. As far as my diet I drink a banana, egg, peanut butter milkshake every day enfore cross country practice. I've notice many MS patients have low vitamin D. Just taking it alone won't work since you need vitamin E & K.

ah good old vit d3. have you started taking it yet (and vit E and K?)? if so, what else are you taking?

you may already know that vit D3 taken without proper mineral balancing can deprive your system of critically important magnesium resources. if you have an active lifestyle, an ms diagnosis, and muscle cramps these all point to your having low magnesium to start with. vit D3 supplementation without added magnesium would make that likely pre-existing problem worse.

re the banana egg and peanut butter milkshake, none of those ingredients are listed as healthy magnesium sources here http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tnam ... #foodchart

also, the recipe sounds like a highly pro-inflammatory combo.
the IF score for that shake (using default serving sizes) is: banana -38, egg -85, PB +10, milk -71. total -184, strongly pro-inflammatory
when you're well, you're supposed to go for a daily anti-inflammatory score of at least +50.
when you're sick, you can aim for +100.
more info: http://inflammationfactor.com/look-up-if-ratings/

so, what's the rest of your diet like? does it balance out the shake?

anti inflammatory foods will prevent side effects such as migraines, vomiting?
When I took steroids for the inflammation the next day I woke up with no side effects that day.

i have never seen a study on the use of anti inflammatory foods to prevent drug side effects.
were the steroids given to you to fight the drug side effects, or just to combat inflammation?
i ask because I don't usually study drug interactions except where they deplete nutrients, so i have never learned about whether steroids are typically used to combat drug side effects.
it's definitely interesting though, that the one meal of yours that i know about is distinctly pro inflammatory, and that you noted no side effects after anti inflammatory steroids.

so have you started taking d3 yet (and vit E and K?)? if so, what else are you taking?
what's the rest of your diet like? do you think it will balance out the shake?

i think my most anti inflammatory meal of all is this one: 3oz salmon (+489), 1c sweet potato (+189) and 1c boiled swiss chard (+240). over 900! (and i often like to have even bigger servings of chard :) )

Hi, I was on Copaxone for 6 months and had terrible side affects I then was put on avonex by my Neuro specialist I took it once and felt so bad and depression I stopped takeing it that was 15 months ago I don't take any medication and feel so much better ,I keep to a strict diet and take loads of supplements I still get ms symptoms but feel myself my husband brought me Judy Graham's book Multiple Sclerosis Naturally which has got loads of real positive help I don't what I would have done without it when I was first told I had MS, it is a big thing to stop with the medications when the Neuro specialist was telling all the terrible things which could happen, but for me it was the right one Iwish you all the best.

wow that's lots of supplements! i take vit d3 in my multi, and also in a high potency liquid, one drop (~5000IU) every few days (but i have been lax lately)
what is the brand of your mega mineral complex? how many of those do you take each day? 1000IU of vit d3 per day *might* be a bit low, but it depends on a few other things.

you may want to consider some other essential nutrients.. for example i have found i don't need gingko (which i used to use) now that my various essential nutrient deficiencies have been corrected. you might want to have a read of this, see what you think! www.thisisms.com/ftopict-2489.html
