Kappa & Lambda

Post by MrChris »

Soooo recently my Neurologist has ordered addition blood work to look for Oligoclonal banding. The results cam bace as

" A faint ill defied band of IGG, type Kappa, is detected. A faint ill defined band of IGG type lambda is detected." The test does not indicate whether these findings were polyclonal or monoclonal.

Now, everything that I have come across says there is potential that this is indicative of Multiple Myeloma or MGUS. However, I can not find anything on whether or not this is something that presents itself in Autoimmune diseases such as MS....??

The report on the test suggests Further investigation with quantitation is of immunoglobulins is suggested in 6-12 months.

Thoughts?

MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance) is not associated with MS. MS is polyclonal and localized to the CNS.

This is a fairly common incidental finding, and if you don't have symptoms of systemic autoimmune disease, multiple myeloma...then I'm not sure what the significance of this result is. That is the problem with doctors ordering shotgun tests...the results are often useless...or even harmful by causing anxiety and obfuscation.
