Optic Neuritis

Post by jhar89 »

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with optic neuritis around 7 months ago. I lost about 33% of my vision in my right eye. They did a brain MRI and a Spinal MRI but found no lesions. So good news there I guess. Bad news is my eye site is no better, nor has it improved at all. In fact, I feel like it is blurrier than before and I now have "floaters" in each eye. I am continuing to see specialists but no one has been able to give me any real info or diagnosis at this point. Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm really frustrated and not sure what else I can do (if anything). Thanks.

Welcome to ThisIsMS. What treatment were you given for your ON at the time of your diagnosis?

Thank you. I've been recommended to do a round of IV Prednisone but have declined and been hesitant, since the info I've read is that it "may" speed up recovery but has no long term benefit on outcome. Perhaps others can tell me if they think getting the steroids is worth the side effects, etc. I thought it would clear up on it's own but it has not gotten even a smidge better. Thoughts?

When I had ON, I was given a 3 day course of IV Solumedrol. This helped to clear up my vision in about a week. However, it was given within a couple days of the onset. I do not know if it would still be effective after 7 months. You should check with your doctor about that. I also should note that my vision would still cloud over in response to increased heat and that colors appeared less intense as well. These symptoms took about 6-9 months to finally resolve.
