Symptoms of something, does this sound like MS? Help!

Post by daphnedoodle »

Hello and thanks in advance. Have been hiding my head in the sand for some time but have been getting increasingly worried. Symptoms I've had for many years - occasional numbness around my mouth, becoming increasingly frequent and lasting longer.

Symptoms I've noticed in the last year or so: Weird, pinpoint sensations of white hot, almost shock like feelings in my legs when walking, very fast and fleeting. These are intermittent. Also, an increase in clumsiness, hitting my hand or shoulder on a wall or corner when I thought I'd clear it, bumping up against the handle of a drawer wrong, etc. Dropping things.

Symptoms in last few weeks: Frequent inability to remember the right word. That tip of the tongue feeling, but just can't bring the right word to mind. Also increasing forgetfulness.

Advice is welcome. I work in a hospital and I'm afraid to go anywhere where people I work with will wind up seeing any results of imaging. Do you think I should go see a neurologist who will send me to a different hospital for testing? I'm freaking out. Thanks!

"Advice... Do you think I should go see a neurologist?"

Why haven't you seen a doctor yet?

(FYI - there are about 400 illnesses that mimic the symptoms of MS.)

Welcome to ThisIsMS, daphnedoodle.

I suggest that you see your GP, or family doctor, and request a vitamin D blood test called the "25-Hydroxy D." (Also, ask for your own copy of the test results – it is important to have the actual number.)

Vitamin D deficiency is very common and can affect any system in the human body.

A simple, inexpensive blood test can rule out the possibility of a deficiency. The California-based group, GrassrootsHealth (http://www.grassrootshealth.net) recommends that the serum level for healthy people should be at least 40-60 ng/mL. Some doctors recommend that people with neurological symptoms should reach and maintain a level of 80-100 ng/mL.
