MS and taking Cipro

My FNP thought I had a UTI and placed me on Cipro. When my MS Nurse found out she said stop the Cipro because it's not a drug for people with MS to take. Now Im a Nurse and I never heard that, course I'm not an expert by any means on MS infact Im rather clueless about it and am learning painfully slow about this monster called MS.

Well I think the UTI is now a kidney infection. Today my lower back was killing me, peeing blood and a high fever. Yes I know. GET TO THE DOCTOR but frankly Im fed up with them and I looked in my med closet at home and still have that Rx for Cipro. I am starting it tonight but has anyone been told this about Cipro?

You know Cipro is tried and true in the medical field. Its trusted by many but why that one Nurse said its a NO GO for MS is not clear to me.

Cipro raises gamma interferon levels, which can cause relapses in MS patients. Also, the FDA finally released a Black Box warning about Cipro recently because it has been shown to cause tendons to snap in people.

Your pharmacist is much more knowledgeable about medicines than most physicians, so if in doubt, contact your neighborhood pharmacist.

Unfortunately, Cipro is the drug of choice for busy, harried physicians to write a prescription when dealing with infections in patients. It is like all of the other antibiotics suddenly left the planet.

I see it all the time. Quick Rx for Cipro......

UGH!

Calling the Pharm in the a.m. and then the FNP that gave it to me. I can hold off one more night...

Why can't you take Bactrim?? You shouldn't leave it through the night, but get something asap!! And drink tons of water.

I have taken cipro and leviquin(sp) both for various reasons before and after DX and never had a problem. I just finished a round of Cipro for a slight bladder infection and had 0, nada, nothing happen to me. Maybe this is bad for most people, but neither my nuero or urologist have ever had a problem prescribing these meds for me?

Well I called and they would be happy to use something else but they have the best results with Cipro and they noted in all their cases of MS, not one person has ever had any reaction to Cipro or a problem. They are aware of the info out there but they said they have never seen anything other than an allergic reaction to it but that's different which I'm well aware of.

Ok....I'll give this a shot and hope for the best.
